Ethanol Demand and Corn Prices: Impacts on Cattle and Hog Producers

چکیده

John M. Marsh (406) 994-5621 [email protected] Increases in the demand for cornbased ethanol have contributed to substantially higher corn prices. For example, Central Illinois corn prices increased from $1.84/bushel in the fourth quarter of 2005 to $3.28/bushel in the fourth quarter of 2006, an increase of 78.3 percent (LMIC, 2006). Much of the increase in corn prices occurred during the fall of 2006 when, between August and early December, the December 2006 CBOT corn futures increased by nearly 60 percent (Agricultural Online, 2006). Corn constitutes about 95 percent of total feed grain use (corn, oats, barley, and sorghum). These corn price changes, therefore, have increased feed costs and breakeven prices for cattle and hog finishers. Economists generally believe that the U.S. goal of energy independence will sustain strong demand for ethanol and other bio-fuels, thus, future corn prices are likely to be higher than they were in the 1990’s and from 2000 to 2005 (Caldwell, 2006).

Feed Grain Volatility and Effects on Feeder Cattle Producers

John M. Marsh (406) 994-5621 [email protected] Prices received by cow-calf producers depend upon many factors including retail beef demand, red meat and poultry supplies, food safety, trade in live cattle and beef, and breeding cattle inventories. In addition, feed grain supplies and prices are important since they impact the cost of gain in cattle finishing. Cost of gain influences feedlot de...

The Impact of Bio-Ethanol Conversion and Global Climate Change on Corn Economic Performanve of Indonesia

Many studies conclude that the rise in global food prices due to higher demand from the development of biofuels, climate anomalies, and increased of oil prices. Not only the food commodity index rose more than 60 percent, nonfood commodity price index also rose over 60 percent and crude oil price index has increased even further above 60 percent. The purpose of this study is to analyze the impa...

Impacts of U

The rapid increase in oil prices has spurred intense interest in alternative energy sources, with biofuels being one of the more debated and controversial alternatives. In the United States, existing and proposed biofuel policies and the increased price of oil have led to a rapid expansion of ethanol supply. With U.S. federal government policies like the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) in the Ene...

Market Impacts of Reducing the Prevalence of Bovine Respiratory Disease in United States Beef Cattle Feedlots

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a common endemic disease among North American feedlot cattle. BRD can lead to significant economic losses for individual beef cattle feedlot producers through mortality and morbidity. With promising new management and technology research that could reduce BRD prevalence, this study evaluates the potential impacts of a reduction of BRD in the US beef cattle fe...

Impacts of Expanded Ethanol Production on Southern Agriculture

This study analyzes the potential impacts of expanded ethanol production on southern agriculture. Results of regression analysis suggest that acreage planted for field crops (corn, cotton, soybeans, and wheat) is inelastic with respect to relative prices. The results provide statistical evidence of potential significant acreage shifts favoring corn over cotton, soybeans, and wheat. Simulations ...
